Earth day has come and gone. This post was not written before or on earth day on purpose. While l find it fantastic that we honor mother earth one day a year, I think it is important for us to actually do little things to help our environment on a daily basis and not annually. Here are a few ways to keep it up year round.
Why make everyday earth day?:
Being fortunate to have life and enjoy it, it is important that our footprints are light and we leave something for future generations to enjoy. With technology and overpopulation explosion, we are damaging earth’s resources. While you might feel defeated and think there’s nothing you as one person can do, all is not lost. If everyone does their little bit to help, we can actually achieve something. I think recent history has shown us that the our elected officials are not going to do anything to help, not with all their ulterior motives and the vast amounts of money they stand to make from big conglomerates who actually wield the power and are the ones working overtime to accelerate the destruction of the environment.
Ways to make everyday remarkable earth day:
This is one of my favorite ways to make everyday earth day. Our house was full of “antique” furniture. Old sturdy wonderful and lovingly built pieces that are made to last a lifetime and then some, as opposed to disposable furniture that one gets nowadays at stores. Not only does it save trees from being chopped down, you have beautiful and personality filled stuff. When you have unwanted items, donate them to charity so they get new life. One man’s thrash and all that 🙂 ! Same goes for buying used clothing, jewelry, shoes etc. from second hand and thrift stores such as Goodwill. Hey, you end up with unique pieces. What’s not to love?
Our gas consumption is at an all time high. Help reduce pollution by driving less. Walking is a good alternative. Bicycling is a good one as well. Not only will you feel better, you also get in better shape. A win-win situation. A hybrid car is an option if walking is out of the picture and need to get to far-off places. Ride sharing or public transport also helps towards the goal. Boohoo that all the big companies have less profit. Cry me a river 😉 !
This is something l admit l have trouble with, but want to be better at. I don’t have a green thumb at all. However, my desire to help the earth has made me vow to start planting. We recently moved to a new apartment. The previous owners had plenty of plants as evidenced by all the vases as well as the dead plants we found since the place was empty for a long time. I intend to read up and make this place green again. Plants make oxygen and we need oxygen to survive.
Reuse and Re-purpose:
I thought l was being cheap because l always found ways to reuse or re-purpose things. Now l know l was helping the earth, Yeah!!. When the butter is finished, I use the tub to store food. An old stained tee-shirt? I use it to mop or clean. Even my paper napkins don’t get thrown out right away after eating. I use it to clean the table or use it again for another meal. We reuse plastic cups. We take our own reusable bags to the grocery store. We also make sure to sort out the trash. Anything that can be recycled is, and are put in the proper containers. These little things help a lot.
Life is extremely precious. Be thankful everyday. Realize how fortunate you are to be alive. Many people are gone much too soon and you shouldn’t take it for granted. Being thankful gives you inner peace and can make you appreciate the world more. Be kind to yourself and to others. Happiness can be infectious. The earth just might be a better place with our joint efforts.
These are just a few ways you can help make everyday earth day without expanding a lot of energy. This can be incorporated into your lifestyle with minimal effort. You will feel better knowing that you are leaving lighter footprints and future generations will benefit from your efforts.
